Butler Snow Attorney Named 2024 Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America

Butler Snow LLP is pleased to announce attorney Robert E. Sumner IV has been selected as a 2024 Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA) for his exceptional work as a trial attorney. LCA Fellows are nominated through peer nominations and selected based on level of effectiveness, ethical reputation and overall accomplishment within litigation and trial work.

 The Litigation Counsel of America is an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society established to reflect the new face of the American bar. Membership is limited to 3,500 Fellows, representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. The composition of the LCA is aggressively diverse, with recognition of excellence among American litigation and trial counsel across all segments of the bar. The purpose of the LCA is to recognize deserving, experienced, and highly qualified lawyers, to provide an outlet for scholarly authorship of legal articles on trial and litigation practice, to provide additional sources for professional development, to promote superior advocacy and ethical standards in the practice of law, to assist in community involvement by its membership, and to advance a superior judiciary, by taking relevant positions on issues or legislation affecting judicial compensation and/or benefits, as well as those affecting the American litigation processes.

Robert Sumner is a member of Butler Snow’s Commercial Litigation Group. He focuses his practice on complex civil litigation for a range of business clients, including large corporations, small businesses, manufacturers, real estate owners and developers and trustees. He handles jury and non-jury cases throughout the country and has appeared before the North Carolina and South Carolina Courts of Appeals and Supreme Courts, as well as the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Sumner was previously recognized by Super Lawyers® for Business Litigation from 2016-2021 and Best Lawyers in America® for Commercial Litigation and Trusts & Estates Litigation from 2021-2024, as well as Real Estate Litigation in 2024. In 2023, Best Lawyers in America® named Sumner Lawyer of the Year in Litigation – Trusts and Estates in Charleston. He was also named to Charleston Business Magazine’s Legal Elite lists for Business Litigation in 2021 and 2022.

Sumner earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina and his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina.
