Butler Snow’s primary means through which it identifies and hires new law school graduates is its Summer Associate Program. The Summer Associate Program focuses on candidates who have completed their first (1L) year and second (2L) year of law school and is offered for six (6) weeks during the first half of the summer from mid-May to late June in the firm’s offices in the following cities:

• Baton Rouge, Louisiana

• Birmingham, Alabama

• Charleston, South Carolina

• Huntsville, Alabama

• Memphis, Tennessee

• Nashville, Tennessee

• Ridgeland, Mississippi

The firm’s Recruiting Committee is tasked with considering candidates for the Summer Associate Program as well as for full-time associate positions. In reviewing applications and interviewing candidates for participation in the Summer Associate Program, Butler Snow:

• Typically requires that applicants be in the top 10% of their class; and

• Seeks applicants with demonstrated skills in judgment and reasoning, communication (writing and speaking) and personal relations. These skills may be reflected by a person’s academic performance as well as his or her involvement in extracurricular interests and activities.

Candidates who complete the Summer Associate Program following their 1L year may be invited back to participate in the Summer Associate Program during the summer after their second (2L) year of law school.

Butler Snow typically makes offers for full-time associate positions from among those candidates who have participated in the Summer Associate Program. When selecting law students to invite into the firm as full-time associates, Butler Snow continues to value applicants who remain in the top 10% of their class and demonstrate skills in judgment, reasoning, communication (writing and speaking) and personal relations. The firm also prefers applicants who have been members of a predominant law journal or Moot Court at their schools.

Overall, Butler Snow seeks candidates with the ability, judgment, personality, energy and commitment to develop into wise counselors, effective advocates and valued colleagues.
