Ben practices within the Regulatory and Government Practice Group focusing on general insurance and captive insurance matters.

About

Ben works with business owners and service providers on forming and operating captive insurance companies, traditional insurance company matters, and tax issues related to insurance companies. He previously worked at the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance as the Supervising Attorney for Insurance. He also has prior experience with the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office and served as a Judge Advocate in the United States Navy.

Under Ben’s leadership, Butler Snow was recognized by Captive Review as the legal services firm of the year at the 2021 US Captive Service Awards. Ben serves as the chairperson of the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s Captive Insurance Committee. He is a course instructor for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education and previously served as its board President. Ben is a frequent speaker and author on the subject of captive insurance and has been recognized by Captive Review as a “Power 50” and “Ones to Watch.”

Ben also serves as a regulatory consultant on captive insurance matters to the Insurance Board of the Federated States of Micronesia and regularly works with insurance professionals and entrepreneurs in Japan seeking to form captive insurance companies in Micronesia.

Ben holds a certificate from the International Center for Captive Insurance Education as an Associate in Captive Insurance and held a certification as a Professional in Insurance Regulation by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Ben also maintains a traditional insurance regulatory practice assisting clients with traditional insurance company formations, mergers, dissolutions, and other regulatory actions. He also serves as the Administrator for the Tennessee Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association.

Ben completed his undergraduate education at Wabash College. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law and received his LL.M. from Boston University School of Law. Ben is a member of the American, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Nashville Bar Associations.
