Butler Snow Attorney Appointed 2024 Chair of the American Bar Association’s International Tax Committee

Butler Snow LLP is pleased to announce that the American Bar Association (ABA) recently appointed John Shoemaker to serve as the 2024 Chair of the International Tax Committee commencing on September 1, 2024. His induction took place last week on May 7th at the 2024 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

The ABA’s International Tax Committee focuses on international taxation of businesses and investments and international tax planning, including transfer pricing, thin capitalization, treaties to avoid double taxation, exchange of information (FATCA, CRS, Tax Exchange of Information Treaties, etc.), taxation of international corporate and financial transactions, and other international corporate and individual tax matters (e.g., cross-border practice focusing on private client issues).

John Shoemaker, a distinguished member of Butler Snow’s Estates & Trust, Tax and Wealth Transfer International practice groups, brings over 30 years of experience in legal & regulatory compliance. His educational emphasis on taxation, trusts & estate planning, and his extensive experience in ensuring multi-jurisdictional compliance for product offerings, including product management skills, have earned him a reputation as a trusted advisor. He has also demonstrated his ability to direct complex products from concept to fully operational status.

Chambers High Net Worth recognized Shoemaker for his work in Private Wealth Law in Singapore for three consecutive years (2020-2023). He is admitted to the Kansas Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States Tax Court.

He currently serves on the Kansas Bar Association’s Board of Governors and is a member of the Society of Trust & Estates Practitioners (TEP), the Singapore Trustees Association, the American Bar Association, and the STEP Singapore Branch Committee. He often speaks on various private wealth topics at international conferences and webinars.

John Shoemaker earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and his Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law. He also holds a LL.M in Taxation from the University of Alabama School of Law.
