Butler Snow attorney Melvin J. Malone has been named to the 2024 Best of the Bar list by the Nashville Business Journal. The Best of the Bar honors the best and brightest in the legal field in Nashville across a range of practice industries. The public submits nominations, and the nominees then participate in a round of closed voting to determine the final list. Melvin’s 2024 Best of the Bar recognition marks the fourth time that he has been highlighted by the NBJ’s Best of the Bar honorees.

Melvin serves as Butler Snow’s Regulatory and Government Practice Group Leader and focuses his practice on telecommunications, public utilities, governmental relations, commercial litigation and administrative law. He has served clients primarily in Tennessee but has also worked on matters in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi.
The Best Lawyers in America® has recognized Melvin for his expertise across many different practice areas, including energy law, government relations, administrative/regulatory law and communications law. He has also been recognized as the Lawyer of the Year for energy in Nashville four separate times since 2018. He is currently serving as a member and chair of the Board of Directors for the TPAC Management Corporation. Melvin is AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell and has been recognized as one of Nashville’s Top 101 Lawyers by the Nashville Post Magazine.
In addition to his work with his clients, Melvin is involved in many different legal organizations and holds leadership positions within them. He is a Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Napier-Looby Bar Association, and he is a member of the Tennessee Alliance for Black Lawyers and the Knoxville Bar Association.
Melvin’s civic involvement in his community is highlighted by the organizations that he helps lead throughout Tennessee. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Chi Boule Foundation and the John M. Perkins Foundation and is a former member of the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center and the NASBA Center for Public Trust. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees with The Memorial Foundation, Inc. He is the Chair Emeritus for both 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee and the Tennessee State University Foundation Board. Melvin is also a member of the dean’s advisory circle for the University of Tennessee’s College of Law.
Melvin earned both his bachelor’s degree and his Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee. He is admitted to the State Bar of Tennessee.
